Men’s – Women’s – Children’s Choirs

Fischerweise (2012) for TTBB men’s chorus and piano – 3’30”. The piece was the winner of the 2013 Houston Saengerbund Choral Composition Contest for Männer Chor, and was premiered on May 5, 2013, in League City, Texas, by the combined Männer Chor of the Staats Festival.

Women’s Choir – accompanied

They that trust in the Lord (2001) for SSA choir and piano and (2007) for SAB and piano – 2’45”. Based on Psalm 125, KJV, this charming work asks us to trust the Lord and do good unto others.

The Angel Choir, Joy Worcester Hire, director, in a 2022 photo.  When the recording of They that trust in the Lord was made, it was a young women’s choir.

I’m Nobody! (2001) for SSA choir and piano – 1’30”.  This setting of Emily Dickinson’s poem would make a good encore.

The piece was premiered by the women of the Coastal Carolina Community Choir on April 26, 2002, while I was still the director.

Children’s Choir

I Have a Little Shadow (12/19/15) for 2-part choir – 3’15”; (5/10/18) for TBB a cappella – 3’15”.  This poem, from Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses was one of my sister’s favorites when she was young. It is a clever, tongue-in-cheek verse that is best treated seriously to achieve its comic effect. In this setting, the rapid five-note scales represent the shadow, hovering close to the vocal lines.

Come, My Little Children (4/21/15) for SSAA children’s choir, piano and Glockenspiel – 5’15” – also available as SSAA a cappella (5/10/18) 3’40”.  Robert Louis Stevenson’s delightful poem encourages children to learn and study music so that when they go to bed, all their favorite songs will echo in their heads.
