CELLO – Solo/Duo

Cello:

Sonata for Cello and Piano (3/5/19) – 12’25”.  The three movements of this sonata share the same key signature, but they are not all in the same key and do not share the same character.  The Allegretto movement is in D minor. It is bold and dramatic, featuring two themes.  The Adagio movement emphasizes E as its tonal center, making it an example of the locrian mode.  Combined with quartal harmonies, this gives the movement a mysterious and somewhat ethereal quality.  The Allegro movement is intentionally folksy, with lively melodies emphasizing two new key centers, G (dorian mode) and Bb (lydian mode). The cheerful, driving rhythms of the movement bring the sonata to a satisfying conclusion.  MIDI recording.

Honor (1/12/14) for unaccompanied solo cello – 5’40”.  This virtuosic piece explores both the pride and the potential difficulties of living a life with honor.  Its beginning is march-like and proud, but the middle sections reflect self-doubt and hard decisions.  MIDI recording.
