Natural History – unaccompanied alto saxophone

Natural History (1982) Suite for alto saxophone – 10’15”.  These six short movements were composed in honor of Margaret Mead, although the connections to her work were stretched beyond recognizable limits.  For instance, “Chaconne as performed on the Remotest Coastal Plains” is a bop-style jazz solo about Thelonious Monk who was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, not too far from the coastal plains where I composed the work.  The other movements are the charming “Aboriginal Waltz,” the very chromatic “Full Color Portrait of a Modulator,” the twelve-tone “Anthropomorphic Dodecaphon,” the highly experimental “Indigenous Primal Resources,” and the touching and genuine “Blackberry Curator: A Tribute.”  All were composed to show off the skills of saxophonist Kenneth Hubbard.
