Love’s Shades of Gray – song cycle for soprano and piano

Love’s Shades of Gray – The five poems in Love’s Shades of Gray were first published in a collection of poems by Rob Smith entitled Two-Hundred Fifty-Six Zones of Gray (Bird Dog Publishing, 2008).  I was impressed by the immediacy and intimacy of the poetry’s expression.  Many of the poems also displayed a fine sense of humor.  After reading the volume, I asked for, and was granted, permission to set his poems for this cycle.

The first poem in the cycle is “Beyond Horizons.”  It expresses a yearning to explore the unknown with the hope of finding love.  The second poem in the cycle, “If I scare you,” asks a lover to come closer and walk hand-in-hand because “love casts out fear.”  “Town Gossip” is a humorous poem about a nosey neighbor thinking the poet must be rich because she lives a comfortable life with her spouse.  The fourth poem, “If we were children,” asks whether adults walking hand-in-hand and obviously in love would even be noticed if they were children.  “Quiet Time” describes passion and concludes “it is still you I love.”
