Bye bye, Lully, Lullay

Bye Bye, Lully, Lullay (5/26/18) for SATB choir and oboe3’40”.  This setting of the text of the Coventry Carol emphasizes mourning for the lost children with its title refrain that opens the work. At the same time, it shocks its audience with Herod’s cruelty that is both deliberate and, at the same time, appears as a form of casual entertainment. It is no wonder this strong, dramatic text has survived almost five hundred years.
